Bhubaneswar, Feb 27: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Friday said that the role of Water Resources (WR) department is important for the development of Odisha’s agrarian economy.
Speaking at the pre-Induction training and workshop organised by Water Resources department for new inducted engineers here today, Patnaik said in the emerging climate change scenario the role of Water Resources Engineers are going to be critical for designing structures that would be climatologically sound and sustainable in providing efficient irrigation systems to maximize cropping and thereby improving the Gross Domestic Product of the State and livelihood of its citizens.
The Chief Minister said the WR department has been entrusted with a target of creating more than 10 lakh hectares of irrigation in five years and around equivalent area in the next decade.
He added that the farmers of Odisha have great expectations from the engineers and officials of the WR department.
On the occasion , as many as 316 civil and mechanical engineers were inducted into the WR department in civil and mechanical streams.
