Thane: December 15: One clothes shop owner has been offering one kg of onion free to the customers on purchase of items worth Rs.1000 at his shop in Thane. He said, the number of subscribers has increased since the inception of the scheme.
For the past several weeks, onion price has crossed Rs 100 per kg in almost all markets of the country.
One of the employee of that cloth shop said, onion is being sold here at Rs 130 per kg. Therefore, on purchasing a cloth of Rs 1,000, we are giving one kilogram of onion for free. There has been a huge increase in the number of customers.
In a year, onion prices in major cities of the country have increased five times to Rs 101.35 per kg on average. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs Danve Raosaheb Dadarao said that on Tuesday (December 10), the average daily price of onions stood at Rs 101.35 per kg, compared to Rs 55.95 a month ago and Rs 19.69 a kg a year ago.
He said, the total Kharif and Late Kharif production for 2019-20 is estimated to be 54.73 lakh tonnes as against 69.91 lakh tonnes in 2018-19. Onion is a seasonal crop and is cultivated during Rabi (March to June), Kharif (October to December) and Late Kharif (January to March).
