Rourkela, Feb 4: Rourkela Steel Plant has developed around 20 new specialised products, including for the defence sector as part of its drive to slash the country’s import burden and adopt the ‘Make in India’ mission.

This is a part of the steel plant’s endeavour towards developing niche products to cut down the import burden of the country apart from making the requisite steel available to the downstream domestic manufacturers, a RSP release said Thursday.

The Special Plate Plant (SPP) of RSP that supplies steel to the Defence Sector has been continuously innovating and evolving new grades of plates to cater to the changing needs, the press release said.

The DMR 292 A grade for the Navy and Armour Plates for Bullet proof applications are two examples of new products churned out by SPP, the release said.

Recently had RSP rolled out and supplied Boiler Quality Plates of thickness 140 mm in the grade IS 2002 GR-II for the first time, which is again an import substitute, it said.

Besides, the Hardox 400 grade quenched and tempered plates developed by SPP are being used in making of earth moving equipment, it said.
