Bhubaneswar: May 11: Faculties in medical colleges need to keep themselves abreast of the changes taking place in medical science at tremendous speed to ensure they churned out quality students, an eminent medical teacher and expert said on Tuesday.

“What you teach to your students today is proved wrong in ten years time as medical science has been evolving at great speed. You must keep abreast of the developments,” Prof Sindhunandini Tripathy, former Head of the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, SCB Medical College Hospital, Cuttack, said.

Prof Tripathy, who was speaking at the inauguration of the two-day ‘Impulse-2016’, the annual festival of students at the IMS and Sum Hospital, the faculty of medical science of SOA University, urged the faculty members to get into research as well.

Every faculty member should have some research paper which should be taken into consideration during promotions, she said.

“The goal of medical education should be to churn out quality students to whom the teachers themselves would think of going for treatment when they are sick,” Prof Tripathy said adding India today had the highest number of medical colleges in the world with the highest number of teachers and  students as well.

Medical Director of IMS and Sum Hospital Prof DK Ray presided over the gathering which was also addressed by the Dean of the institute Prof Gangadhar Sahu, Consultant (Health Services) Dr PK Mohanty and Medical Superintendent Dr Pushparaj Samantasinhar.
