Rourkela, May 19 : An innovative job undertaken by the Quality Circle Team, ‘Sea Hawks’, of Coke Ovens Department of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has led to substantial savings for the company.
The project titled ‘Minimising inconsistency in Coal blend and extra Coke consumption in Blast Furnaces’ was implemented by the members of the Quality Circle Team comprising JK Mishra, MK Gharai, RK Sahu, RK Bisoyi and DK Behera – all Senior Operatives of Coke Ovens Department, RSP sources said adding Assistant Manager Coke Ovens B Panda facilitated the project.
The team took up the problem of blend inconsistency in coal which the Department used to face and found out its root cause, they said.
RSP sources said, the team suggested and implemented the installation of three unique blend control units which included the Moisturiser Unit, De-Moisturiser Unit and Mixer Unit.
The Moisturiser Unit helps in adding rated amount of moisture in to the blend to keep the moisture content within 7 to 8% while the De-Moisturiser Unit removes the extra moisture content during rainy season, they added.
The mixer unit mixes the coal in the Coal bed to minimise the ash percentage which plays a vital role in Coke making as well as Hot Metal production.
As a result of the project the blend coke ash variation as well as micum has been successfully minimised. The project has led to the benefit of more than Rs. 1.5 crore per annum due to a saving of approximately 1200 Tonnes of Coke in the Blast Furnaces, the sources added.
They said, the team recently represented RSP in the 21st All Odisha Quality Circle Convention organised by NALCO at Bhubaneswar and bagged the Runners up Trophy.
Notably, a total of 37 QC teams from different corporate houses had participated in the event.
