Transgenders recruited as Jail warders; SC orders

 Bhubaneswar, Aug 2: After the order given by the Supreme Court, the Odisha government will recruit Transgender for the jail warders’ post.

After the announcement, a letter regarding to take necessary steps for this has been sent to Odisha Subordinate Staff Selection Commission (OSSSC) by the State Police, officials sources informed.  

The government by announcing this new concept has provided livelihood support and fulfilled the long standing demand of transgender, a transgender Geeta said and also thanked to the media houses, Chief Minister, secretaries and DIG jail. They requested state’s various corporate houses and other departments to give them opportunity and also demanded for a transgender commission through which more issues of the community can be addressed.

An application had been written to the ADG-cum-IG of Prisons and Department of Correctional Service (DCS) on July 27, 2016 by the Deputy Home Secretary, BB Mishra asking for suggestions on the decision of inculcating transgender based on gender category while recruitment of jail warders by keeping their physical standards at the same level as that of women candidates as per the observation of the Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD). The letter also said that the ADG should confirm the suggestion to OSSSC in order to start the process of recruitment.
