Bhubaneswar, Aug 5: Season’s first rainwater reserve has been released by the Hirakud dam today, as the water level in the dam had increased due to heavy rains in the upper catchment of Mahanadi.

The excess water had been released through number 7 sluice gate and 10 sluice gates would be opened between 10 am to 12:30 pm today to release the excess water.

As planned earlier, standard operating procedure has been followed by the authority regarding the release of water from the dam.

Alert notification has been sent to the administrations of 12 districts- Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Phulbani, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Angul, Boudh, Nayagarh and Cuttack.

Today’s released flood water would not create a threat of flood, informed, PK Jena, Water Resources Secretary. However, keeping in mind the possibility of rise in water level, people have been advised to be aware and not let their cattle go close to the river.
