Health minister ensured 24X7 safety to doctors by State Government

Bhubaneswar, Aug 22: Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, the State Health Minister on Sunday said, the Government is taking all possible steps to ensure the safety of doctors and staff working at hospitals in Odisha.

There is a provision for ensuring the safety of doctors as per a law passed in 2009. The Home Department has been instructed to take strict action against the law breakers, in case some issues arise in hospitals.

The Home Secretary has discussed about the issue with the Director General of Police.

While on Friday, through a letter, the Health Secretary Arati Ahuja had requested the Home Department to open police outposts in the premises of District Headquarters Hospital, Sub-divisional hospitals and all tertiary care institutions, besides installing CCTV cameras.

Notably, a medicine specialist doctor named Bharat Samal, was admitted to the ICU on August 19, as he sustained critical injuries when the relative of a patient attacked him alleging medical negligence at Balasore district headquarters hospital.

In another incident, the doctors at the Puri District Headquarters hospital on August 18 had ceased work citing the failure of the district administration to provide security to them after relatives of a patient, who died at the hospital, ransacked the hospital premises and attacked the doctors. Later, after an assurance by the Puri SP Sarthak Sarangi for 24X7 security to the doctors, the cease work stir by the doctors was called off.
