Infant dies of Malaria in Mahadeijoda; death toll increases to 10

Keonjhar, Aug 24: Along with Nagada where children died due to malnutrition in Jajpur district, now it’s Mahadeijoda’s turn which solely shows the failure of various healthcare facilities in the state.

 With the death of an infant here that too in the busy hours of the day on Tuesday, the death toll has risen to 10. Within a span of 30 days various fatal deaths have been reported from this particular tribal area which is said to be a district of Odisha rich in minerals. Mamuni Behera (7), Damburudhara Mahanta (45), Laxmidhar Munda (40), Lakhan Munda (62), Narendra Mahanta (9), Kasturi Behera (25), Basu Patra (40), Bisi Munda (67) and, Sukumari Munda (62) belonging to this tribal village have died in last one month.

The latest is of a 3-year old boy named Raidas Nayak. He took his last breath at the District Headquarters hospital yesterday early morning. Nayak was admitted to the hospital on Sunday where his blood samples were tested as positive for Malaria. This child belonged to Bhuiyan Sahi near Naupada under Mahadeijoda in Keonjhar district. Not only this, five-year-old Manas, the brother of the deceased has also been admitted to the DHH infected with the vector-borne disease and is in a serious condition. Along with this six more persons have been admitted to the DHH yesterday.

In the meantime, medical expert team from Padmapur Community Health Centre (CHC) yesterday visited the affected village to provide health facility to the village residents. Chemicals were also sprayed at places to stop breeding of mosquitoes so as to prevent further spread of the disease.
