Bhubaneswar, Aug 29: Under the ‘Mahaprayana Scheme’, the provision of hearse that was flagged off by the Odisha Chief Minister on August 25  to carry the bodies of persons who die at government hospitals to their homes, will not be available for free but will be a ‘pay and use service’ at ‘no profit no loss’.

The guidelines under the ‘Mahaprayana Scheme’ clearly states that beneficiaries irrespective of their financial background, can avail the service on ‘pay and use’ basis and the service would operate on ‘no profit no loss’ basis.

Moreover, District Collectors have been directed to fix per kilometer charges taking into consideration mileage of the vehicle, maintenance, tax, and insurance.

Opposition parties are against this scheme and have lashed out at the Odisha government.

However, the BJD has defended the government’s decision of ‘pay and use’ where family members of the dead will pay the money to carry the body of their dear ones.
