Cruelty comes to fore: Branding of 7 month old baby with hot iron

Jeypore, Sept 6: Another cruel practice to cure diseases has come to fore when a seven month infant was marked with a hot branding iron by a village fraudster who claimed to cure that baby’s disease at Bhaluguda under Jeypore block in Koraput district. Immediately the baby has been hospitalized in Jeypore sub-divisional hospital for treatment.

It’s stated that after been branded with that hot iron, the infant is now suffering from pneumonia. As it was having breathing problem, the baby has been administered with required saline and injection. Its’ condition is stated to be stable now. If required the baby will be shifted to the ICU.  All this was informed by the paediatrician, Sandeep Tripathy. He also further added that the infant was having measles type of a disease which had infected its navel and so in order to supposedly cure it, the baby was branded with not nail by a Disari.

The mother, Ranjita Parja had taken the baby to the quack after infection in navel showed no sign of improvement.  Similar cases have been reported from tribal areas such as Nabarangpur, Koraput, Rayagada and others.
