Bhubaneswar, Oct 1: Today a hartal was declared by the BJD in seven districts of southern Odisha which are Malkangiri, Koraput, Raygada, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal for protesting against the national project status to Polavaram. Although the hartal took place without any commotion, but still shops and offices remained shut and also transportation was at halt. It’s stated that the party activists also conducted a rail roko at the Berhampur railway station today morning itself. But schools and colleges where exams were being conducted were open.

It must be mentioned here that the BJD has been opposing the Polavaram project on the apprehension that all villages residing in the Malkangiri district will get submerged because of this project. While the erstwhile Centre’s UPA government had accorded the Polavaram project as the national project, the incumbent NDA government has announced to provide all financial support to the project.
