Dhenkanal, Oct 14: BJP party candidate Sudhanshu Dalei was elected as the Dhenkanal Municipality Chairman on Thursday through lottery after the voting ended in a tie.
Only 18 councilors were present for the voting out of the 23 councilors in the Dhenkanal Municipal Council. The voting ended in a tie as Sudhanshu along with independent candidate Rudranta Dalei got 9 votes each. During the voting, 5 councilors from BJP, 11 from Congress and 1 out of 6 BJD councilors were present.
After the by-election, Sudhanshu said that he will work hard and ensure civic development of the town.
Notably, Indramani Behera, Dhenkanal Municipality chairman had lost a no-confidence vote on August 1. The Congress had brought the motion against him by alleging that he had not taken Councilors to confidence while taking decisions regarding various projects and also for his alleged involvement in several corruption charges.
Thus, a decision to conduct the by-poll election was taken by the State Election Commission after hearing of a petition over the issue filed in the High Court.
