Encephalopathy a cause of deaths, Besides JE

Bhubaneswar, Nov 19: The central expert team on friday in its interim report claimed that apart from the JE, Encephalopathy is another reason for the death of kids in Malkangiri. The reason for this is due to the consumption of seeds of Bana Chakunda plant, scientifically called cassia Occidentalis.

The head of the Expert team Jacob Jonn suspected that “Anthraquinone” is the toxin, that is found in the seeds of the plant. Which indicates that the children consume the seeds of the plant.

Encephalopathy is a disease that affects brain, heart, liver and muscles.Health secretary Arti Ahuja also admits the cause of deaths to be Encephalopathy. In addition she said the sate govt is taking all possible steps to find the cure. Around 95 deaths were reported in 180 villages and Malkangiri municipality area and about 230 cases were discharged after complete recovery, said Ahuja.
