SOA Cup: Faculties share the trophies

Bhubaneswar, March 3: Civil Engineering department of Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER), faculty of engineering of the SOA University, won the Football and Basketball titles while Mechanical Engineering walked away with the Cricket and Volleyball crowns in the men’s section of the SOA Cup inter-college sports competitions which concluded here on Wednesday.

Civil Engineering beat Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) in the Football final and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) in the Basketball final. ECE also lost to Mechanical in the Volleyball title clash.

In the gripping men’s cricket final against Electrical Engineering, Mechanical, chasing a target of 116 in 20 overs could manage to scramble a bye off the last ball of the innings with two wickets in hand to win the encounter.

Hockey Olympian Lazarus Barla was present to give away the prizes in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor of SOA University, Prof. Amit Banerjee at the SOA Stadium. Barla, who represented India in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, recounted his experience in the international arena while urging the students to devote attention to their own health. SOA University’s Dean (Students Welfare), Prof. S.S.Nanda presided over the program which was also addressed by Dr. J.R.Das, Associate Dean (SW) and Sports Officer, Ms. Sunita Barma.

The other events in the 45-day long competition in the men’s section included Lawn Tennis, Softball, Table Tennis, Kabaddi and Chess.

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPS) finished at the top in Kabaddi while Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IAS) won the Softball event. In both the finals, SOA Institute of Agricultural Sciences (SNIL) finished second.

Jayendra of IMS got the better of Soumyajeet Panigrahi of the same college to win the Lawn Tennis crown while Santosh Sreenivas (Mechanical) beat Amrit Chakraborty (Civil) in the Table Tennis final.

In Chess, Kushal Agarwal (ECE) won the title at the expense of Srinivas Biswal (Computer Science and Engineering).

In the women’s section, IAS girls did the start turn winning the Cricket and Softball competitions and finishing second to SPS in the Throw Ball final. In Cricket and Softball, IAS beat SPS and SUM Nursing College (SNC) respectively. SNC won the Kabaddi final defeating ITER.

Shraddha Ray of Institute of Dental Sciences (IDS) was the Lawn Tennis champion for girls defeating Swagatika Mohapatra (ITER).
