Bhubaneswar, Apr 1: For the study of adaptability of Chilika’s ecosystem, under the zoological survey of India, the water of the Chilika lake has been taken for scrutinisation.
The ZSI, Kolkata undertook the study to throw light upon the growth of fauna along the wetland sites of the lagoon. Along with the study of fauna, they are also examining the content of salinity in the water due to the inflow of water through the new mouth which connects to Bay of Bengal. Researchers are also trying to find out if the salinity content of the water from the new mouth is compatible for the aquatic and terrestrial species living alongside the lagoon and the wetland sites.
Notably, founded in 1916, ZSI had turned 100 on July 2016 and has undertook the study of the comprehensive study of the ecosystem of Chilika to commemorate the occasion. The ZSI had conducted similar studies on Chilika twice before in 1916 and 1967. As per sources, the previous reports will be compared with the present research work to identify the difference and also to know more about it’s causes.
