Bhubaneswar, Apr 13: Ninety-eight years ago, on this very day one of the bloodiest actions of British Rule happened, the intended massacre of around 2,000 Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus at the Jallianwala Bagh. The firing which was committed by an officer of the British Colonial Power, General Dwyer took away many live whose official figure is said to be 1,526 but the actual figure is said to be much higher.
The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, one of the worst political crimes of the 20th century was committed in Punjab on 13th of April, 1919. It is said that on the day, a Sikh teenager who was being raised at Khalsa Orphanage named Udham Singh saw the happening with his own eyes and avenged the killings of 1500+ of his countrymen by killing Michael O’Dwyer in Caxton Hall of London. On July 31, 1940, Udham Singh was hanged at Pentonville jail in London.
The site, Jallianwala Bagh has today become a national place of pilgrimage.
