Kolkata, Nov 20: a school in West Bengal’s Bishnupur area in south 24 pargana district has banned a student who has tested positive for HIV/ AIDS.
According to a report in a leading national daily, The boy’s maternal grandmother, who teaches Bangla in the same school, has also been forced to take an HIV test to prove her “purity.”
The report said the student was asked to leave the school immediately after the prayer for being HIV-positive about five months ago.
Despite the intervention of teh West Bengal administration, the seven-year-old student of a private school has not taken him back following protests from over 100 parents of other students, the report said.
Officials say school authorities have promised to let the boy return after State Women and Child Development Minister Sashi Panja ordered an investigation and asked the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) to intervene.
