Supreme Court rejected Abhijit Iyer Mitra’s bail plea for his alleged derogatory remarks

Bhubaneswar: October 04:The Supreme Court dismissed today Delhi-based Journalist Abhijit Iyer Mitra’s bail petition for his alleged derogatory remarks against Sun Temple at Konark. The apex court slammed Iyer for his comments that have hurt the sentiments of people of Odisha.

The bench of three judges headed by Chief Justice of india Ranjan Gogoi denied bail saying, ‘Your comments hurt the religious feelings. How are you entitled for bail?’

Mitra was arrested by Orissa Police with the assistance of Delhi Police on September 20 in Delhi, on charges of outraging religious sentiments of the people. Further, he was granted bail by a Court.
The writer has been summoned to appear before Orissa Assembly’s three-member privileges committee on October 11.

Responding to Mitra’s counsel’s arguments that his life is in danger, Chief Justice of India said, “If you say your life is in danger, the safest place for you would be in jail. Your life will be secure’.

Earlier, the apex court had extended the interim protection from arrest to Delhi-based journalist Abhijit Iyer till October 5.

Notably, Abhijit Iyer is facing charges over his derogatory remarks on Konark Sun Temple’s architecture.

All quarters of leaders cutting across the party line protest the derogatory remarks given by Iyer on the Sun Temple.
