Guwahati, Dec 6: Four persons, including a six-year-old girl, were injured in two explosions that rocked the city’s commercial hub Fancy Bazaar on Saturday.
“The explosions have not been caused by an IED or a grenade and the nature indicates to be a low intensity one with the possibility of fire crackers being used not ruled out,” Guwahati Police Commissioner Mukesh Agarwal told reporters here.
A minor boy of about 14-15 years age was seen at the spot near a garbage dump in front of a sweet shop in the Old Jail Road of Fancy Bazar area this afternoon around 3:30 pm immediately after that the explosions took place with the boy fleeing from the spot, he said.
The boy was being questioned, Agarwala added.
Four person, including a six-year old girl, were injured in the blasts and were admitted to the nearby Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital and were stated out of danger.
BJP’s Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakraborty, who rushed to the spot, blamed the Congress government of “failing” to ensure safety and security of lives and property to the common people.
Security in the Fancy Bazaar area, which also witnessed a devastating fire on Diwali night, has been strengthened with additional police forces deployed in the area.
Meanwhile, six Jamaat ul Mujaheedin (JuM) militants, including one allegedly close to the Burdwan blast kingpin, were arrested from different places of Lower Assam and huge quantities of arms and ammunition seized, police said.
The police arrested the ‘jehadis’ from Baksa, Chirang, Goalpara and Kokrajhar districts and the prize catch was Monirul Islam alias Burabhai who was absconding since the police busted a jehadi camp in September last.
Islam had allegedly visited Burdwan before the blasts last year and was also attempting to set up training camps for jehadis in Barpeta districts and along the Assam-Meghalaya border, he said.
The arrest was a major breakthrough after the September 15 busting of a camp in Chirang district and the arrest of ten ‘jehadi’ cadre.
