COVID-19 long-haulers may have a significant reduce in kidney functions, says US researchers.

In a new discovery by some new researchers in the US, it has been found that COVID-19 long-haulers may suffer a significant decline in their kidney functions as they suffer a range of adverse conditions months after initial infections.

Study shows that, people having or who had mild infections of the coronavirus may even suffer kidney problems. According to the report published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, carried out by researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care System, shows that people infected with the SARS-COV-2 are at an increased risk of developing kidney damage as well as chronic and end stage kidney diseases.

However, known as a silent killer, this kidney dysfunction in people, won’t even let them know that they have it. Known to be a pain-less disease and free of symptoms, 90% of people with ailing kidneys won’t even know it, say an estimate by the US Kidney Foundation.

Moreover, the research says that, the risk of reduced kidney function is/will be more among those admitted to the ICU’s, but it also draws out to other patients who had mild cases of coronavirus.

However, the researchers have also stated that, if detected early, this defect can be treated with just medication, but delaying it may not help.

In a study by the department, it shows that over 5 lakh people in the US, who suffered from the COVID-19 have kidney infections or are having problems with kidney functions. According to reports, compared to the people who did not get infected with the virus, people who contracted it but did not get hospitalized are at a 15% higher risk of reduce in kidney function, 30% higher risk of developing acute kidney injury and more than two fold higher risk of acquiring end-stage kidney dysfunction.

However, all the stages can be averted with an early detection. But even end-stage dysfunction can be tackled with kidney transplant or at least dialysis to keep patients alive.
