Covid Variant Omicron

Some of the Nations have decided to impose travel restrictions and also expressed concerns over the detection of a new Variant of Concern in South Africa.

Canada, the European Union and the U.K. all announced restrictions on travelers from southern Africa.

But, South African Health Minister Joe Phaahla said, some of the countries’ decisions to impose travel restrictions in his country is “unjustified.”

Phaahla slammed other nations for “wanting to put blame” and ascribing the variant to South Africa rather than working collaboratively to address the situation as guided by the WHO, reported CNBC.

The new variant, known as B.1.1.529, has been detected in small numbers in South Africa. The WHO on Friday assigned the Greek letter Omicron to the variant.

In-between, cases of the new variant have been found in Israel, Hong Kong and Belgium.

The United Kingdom also announced that, it will temporarily suspend flights from six African countries, including South Africa, starting midday Friday.
