Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of students of Utkal University on Saturday held violent protest demonstration over authority’s decision to cancel student union election this year.
A young woman unfortunately died of suffocation caught in the mellee.
The woman was identified as Suman of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand State. Suman was running a computer institute in the capital city.
The university authorities decided to cancel elections of the student body in the wake of violent incidents in the campus recently.
Chairman, PG Council, Ranjan Dhal said that the university decided to cancel the polls due to frequent clashes among student community. It was not possible to deploy police in the entire campus to check such incidents, he said.
However, students were unhappy over the decision and closed the main gate of the campus and blocked the highway passing through the university campus.
Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrat Bhoi succeeded in persuading the agitating students, who later relented and lifted the blockade.
