Keonjhar, Dec 29: The Chairperson of Kendujhargarh Municipality Meena Majhi lost a no-trust motion after 15 councillors voted against her on Monday dealing a blow on the ruling Biju Janata Dal – the party which fielded her for the post.
The Councillors who voted against Majhi included nine from BJD and six from the Congress party. In the 21-member Kendujhargarh Municipality, 14 councillors are from BJD, six from Congress and one from BJP. Notably, the BJD had issued a whip to its councillors on Sunday asking them not to vote in the no-trust motion. However, 9 BJD councillors participated in the motion and voted against her.
A total of 16 councillors of the municipality were present during the no-trust motion of which 15 voted in favour of the motion while one abstained from voting.
Notably, eight BJD councilors defied party whip to vote in favour of the no-confidence motion and the ruling party is contemplating action against them as per the new anti-defection law.”
Though the post was for unreserved category, Chief minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik had nominated Meena Majhi to the post.
