Bhubaneswar, Jan 3:Ruling Biju Janata Dal has announced to launch an agitation from January 7 against the Polavaram project being implemented in Andhra Pradesh.
The party plans demonstrations and strikes in undivided Koraput district to protest the decision of the Centre to go ahead with the project.
BJD demands that the construction activities must be stopped till the case is finalized in the Supreme Court.
He said the State government has been repeatedly urging the Centre to reconsider the project. The State government had apprised the Centre about the violation of Water Tribunal order and National parameters.
He said the project is also being taken up without the concurrence of the Tribal Affairs Ministry though it falls in a tribal dominated area. The mandatory Pallisabha (public hearing0 has also not been conducted in this regard, Mishra added.
“The State government had approached the Supreme Court on October 9 in 2007 saying that the project will submerge a huge tract in tribal dominated areas for which it is opposing the project,” he said.
