Virat Kohli wrote an emotional letter to Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo, after his hopes of playing in the World Cup were dashed.

“No trophy or any title can take anything away from what you have done in this sport and for sports fans around the world. No title can explain the impact you have had on people and what I and so many around the world feel when we watch you play,” Kohli wrote in an Instagram post.

“That is a gift from god. A real blessing to a man who plays his heart out every single time and is the epitome of hard work, dedication, and a true inspiration for any sportsperson. You are for me the greatest of all time.”

After suffering a loss against Morocco by the score of 0-1 in the quarterfinal of the 2022 World Cup, Portugal was eliminated from the competition.

The loss to Morocco was definitely the 37-year-old player’s final participation in the competition, considered to be the pinnacle of football. Immediately following the blowing of the final whistle, the formerly great player for Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus was seen walking off the field while crying. His demeanour betrayed his emotional state.

When the next World Cup is held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Ronaldo will be 41 years old. During his career, he has earned 195 national team caps and set a record with 118 goals scored for his country.
