BHUBANESWAR: Odisha is gearing up for an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring across the state as March begins.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a gradual rise of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in temperature is expected across most parts of the state starting today, with the heatwave intensifying through the coming months.
The IMD forecast indicates that extreme heat will persist from March to May, marking an early onset of what is expected to be a prolonged and severe summer.
On Friday, the mercury breached the 37°C mark, with Jharsuguda emerging as the hottest location in Odisha. Nearby Sambalpur recorded a scorching 36.4°C, while the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack were not far behind, hovering near or slightly surpassing the 34°C mark.
The IMD’s Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar also confirmed that dry weather conditions will prevail over most districts in the state, with no rainfall expected in the next seven days. The rising heat has already made mornings increasingly uncomfortable, and by mid-morning, stepping outside has become unbearable for many.
Meteorologists warn that with the rising minimum temperatures, conditions are becoming conducive for a more intense heatwave, though the IMD has not yet issued an official heatwave advisory. The extended period of high temperatures may lead to new records, further increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
