Khurda: A month after the breakthrough ceremony, Odisha’s longest tunnel, Adenigarh-Charichhak tunnel, on Khurda Road-Balangir new rail project, reportedly caved-in today.

As informed by sources, the 4.1km long Adenigarh-Charichhak tunnel-under the East Coast Railway collapsed near the Nuagaon reportedly between 4.30 PM and 5 PM due to which about a 30-meter wide hole was formed. However, it is not yet cleared either any worker is trapped under the derbies.

While under what circumstances the Adenigarh-Charichhak tunnel collapsed is yet to be known, it is being alleged that the mishap occurred due to poor quality of works.

Meanwhile, East Coast Railway CPRO Ashok Kumar Mishra, while speaking to Kalinga TV, claimed that none of the workers are trapped under the derbies. It was a worksite and efforts by the officials to get more details is underway, he informed.

“A minor soil caving in occurred this afternoon at Tunnel No. 4 on the Khurda-Bolangir Railway line, it is due to loose soil formation and continuous rainfall in the area. There has been no impact on manpower or machinery, and the incident will not affect the overall progress of the project. All necessary safety measures are in place, and work continues as planned,” clarified the East coast Railway in a press release.

It is to be noted here that the breakthrough ceremony of the tunnel was held on June 16, 2025.
