Baby Swap at VIMSAR; DNA Test confirms

Burla: June 9: The DNA test conducted for confirmation about the baby being swapped at the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) has been out with results being positive. Through this report the police have confirmed the allegations put on the hospital here. Gagan Bihari Patra and his wife who had claimed to be the biological parents of the said baby girl are actually correct, reports confirm it.

Notably, Gagan Bihari Patra of Naktideula area of Sambalpur district of Odisha had brought their baby daughter to VIMSAR in Burla on May 21 for treatment. Later on, Hospital Authorities handed over him a dead child and said, his baby died while undergoing treatment. Gagan refused to take the deceased child alleging that his child has been swapped. Further, Gagan filed a complaint at the Burla Police station outpost complaining that his baby was swapped with another baby being born in the same ward in the hospital. Along with Gagan also demanded for a DNA Test to be done. This incident happened on May 21, 2016.

The blood samples of the mother and both the new born were sent to the State Forensic Lab in Bhubaneswar on May 25 for autopsy. The other infant has been handed over to the Childline Authorities after his health stabilized. According to sources, the infant will be handed over to her biological parents today.

As an answer to this mishap happened in the hospital, an internal inquiry committee was set up on the basis of the DNA report. VIMSAR director, Sunamali Bagh informed the media that the official DNA report is yet to be received. Once the report reaches, immediate action would be taken against the culprit behind this incident.
