Bhubaneswar, Jan 22: In a drive to make the state capital beggar free, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation has prepared a roadmap where the local body will be rehabilitating the people involved in begging in the city and will also be shifting the homeless and destitute to shelter homes.
As per sources, BMC is planning to set up several 100 bedded rehabilitation centres across the city and will initiate a Beggar free campaign / drive. Under this, it will identify beggars from throughout the city and rehabilitate them. It will also launch various programmes that will make them self reliant and independent.
The Rehabilitation centres will be operated by various professional organisations, said sources.
Earlier in December, 2020, the government had taken such an attempts to make “Ekamra Kshetra” beggar free. BMC with the help of various NGO’s was trying to identify and rehabilitate beggars near the lingaraj mandir area. This effort was carried out under the Sahaya Scheme of the Government of Odisha.
