Bhubaneswar, July 15: With adopting a new procedure of fine collection, city police would introduce e-challan devices to collect penalty through debit and credit cards for violation of traffic rule. For this process a tender has been issued to procure the devices, Y B Khurania, commissioner of Police informed.

At times it has been found that offenders having no cash are also caught but are released, so by this system police would collect penalty through debit cards and credit cards form violators, a traffic police officer stated. For those who neither carry cash or cards, their vehicles would be seized, police officer further added. It would also help in maintaining more transparency in collection of penalty and can prevent fake manual receipts, as complained by some NGOs recently.

Police had collected around Rs 3.8 crore as a fine from 1.5 lakh violators violating the traffic norms in Bhubaneswar last year. Despite various awareness campaigns, statistics indicated a large number of people do not wear helmets and in 2015, the number of no – helmet bikers were recorded as 48,045. With this new system, the Commissionerate also plans to initiate a networking system in these devices to store the data base of the violators.

With the help of Transport Department, police would verify the driving license of the offenders to know their previous violations. The violations on the part of the offenders would be uploaded in the chips of their driving license, Khurania informed.
