Commissionerate police to launch special drive to check drug peddling and fire arms trade in twin city

Bhubaneswar, Jan 12: During a press meet yesterday at the capital, Police Commissioner YB Khurania stated that the Commissionerate police will soon launch a special drive to check the trade of drug peddling and illegal firearms in the capital, while a lot emphasis would be given to traffic control and protection of women and senior citizens.

Stating about the crimes under the Excise Act, Khurania took out 820 cases reported in 2015 and 991 cases in 2016 in the twin city. Offering the detail crime rate to the media during a press meet, in the twin city, he said that the number of cognizable cases in these cities has come down in 2016 as compared to 2015. While the number was 10,906 in 2015, it has come down to 10,744 in 2016, he added.

Although there is a rise in the crime rate under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act with 12 cases registered in 2015, and the increase in number to 34 in 2016.

While with recovery and seizure of illegal firearms, 113 cases were registered in 2015, 157 cases were registered in 2016. And the seizure has counted to 63 firearms in 2015 and 89 in 2016.

Talking about atrocities on women, 127 rape cases were reported in 2015 out of which 36 were women and 91 were minors, the number has risen to 144 in 2016 with 68 women and 76 minor. About in 99.3% of these cases the accused have been busted in last year. Under Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 27 cases were registered in 2016 as of 21 in 2015.

While 64 cases of murder were recorded in 2016, it has gone up from 61 in 2015. Apart from this, 14 cases of dacoity were reported in 2016 while the police was able to foil dacoity bid on 17 occasions. In comparison, 21 dacoity cases were reported and 30-dacoity bid were foiled in 2015, he added.

Among others 354 cases of burglary including 68 day and 286-night burglary were reported in 2016, while 378 were reported in 2015 including 42 day and 336-night burglary. Besides 1902 theft cases, 746 swindling cases and 914 road accident cases have also been reported.
