Bhubaneswar, March 11: Senior Congress leader Suresh Chandra Routray has demanded a judicial inquiry into the series of animal deaths  in Nandankanan Zoological Park recently.

He threatened to gherao the zoo on April 1 (Utkal Diwas) if the State government did not institute a judicial inquiry by end of this month.

Routray told newsmen that Nandankanan is one of the best Zoos in the country and the series of deaths is cause of concern.

Referring to the recent giraffe death in the zoo, the congress leader said State government had acquired the giraffe in exchange for four tigers, including two rare white tigers.

He expressed surprise as to how the animal was infested by tics when the zoo authorities claim taking proper care of the animals in the zoo.

“ Tics did not come from the DFO’s or Chief Minister’s residences. It needs to be probed whether proper care of the animals is being taken in Nandankanan, ‘ he said.
