Bhubaneswar, April 15: Congress kicked off Bhim Jyoti Yatra to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar at the party headquarter here on Thursday.
Launching the Bhim Jyoti chariot, OPCC president Prasad Harichandan asked his party workers to fight for the rights of dalits.
Addressing the party workers during the event, he said that the efforts made by Ambedkar for development and growth of dalits, socially exploited and neglected people in the constitution, its positive effect has been reflected in the today’s society.
“Both Ambedkar and Congress have worked for strengthening the social and economic condition of the dalits,” he said.
Targeting the State government, he said that the ruling BJD has posed hindrances in the development of socially exploited people by spending funds, which are meant for dalits and tribals, in various schemes.
The chariot will travel to all the 33 organisational districts of the party in the State with an aim to inform the people about failures of the Naveen-led government and Narendra Modi government at Centre, sources said.
Through the Yatra the party leaders will remind people about various welfare schemes undertaken by the Congress governments in the past, they said.
Senior leaders Lalatendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra, Suresh Kumar Routray, Judhisthir Jena, Rabindra Sethy, Shibananda Ray, Gurupad Nanda, Sandhya Mohapatra, Subhendu Mohanty, Kishore Jena, Manoranjan Dash, Sumitra Jena, Sulochana Das, Sangram Keshari Jena, Bijay Dwibedi, Sudhansu Mohanty, Amiya Patnaik, Prakash Mishra, Sushant Tripathy, Itish Pradhan, Bikash Garabadu and several others were present at the programme.
