New Variant AY 4.2 Detected in Karnataka

Cases of ‘AY 4.2’ Covid-19 variant have been found in Karnataka. State has reported 7 cases infected with the new ‘AY 4.2’ Covid-19 variant.

As said, the swab samples which were collected in July by authorities, have tested positive for AY 4.2 strain through genomic sequencing.

Among the seven cases, three are from Bengaluru and four others belong to different districts of the state.

The new variant has been causing havoc in the UK, Russia and China. ICMR Scientist Dr Samiran Panda told News18.com, New Covid variant AY.4.2 seems to be highly transmissible but may not be fatal.

As said by the Experts, AY.4.2 is a sub-lineage of the delta variant of the Covid-causing SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Karnataka Administration have already started tracking down the infected persons.

Maintaining social distancing and wearing masks along with vaccination is the need of the hour, experts say.

India’s Covid genomic surveillance project is on high alert after cases of a sublineage of SARS CoV 2’s delta variant have been detected in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
