Cuttack: 2 Collectorate Employees Arrested

Cuttack: 2 employees of the Cuttack district Collectorate have been arrested for misappropriating a gangrape victim’s compensatory assistance.

The arrested persons have been identified as Sangita Singh of Chakraprasad under Narsinghpur police station limits of the district, who is currently living at Ranpur, and Amiya Kumar Sahoo of Odapainga village in Jagatsinghpur district, who at present is staying at KGB Kalpataru in Khurda (UPD Bhubaneswar).

Police also seized four mobile phones, screenshots of WhatsApp chats and internet banking/Yono Banking transactions of both the accused persons.

The victim lodged a written report at the Lalbag Police Station alleging that Sangita Singh and others cheated her of Rs 1.1 lakh from her compensation sanctioned by the Government of Odisha.

The police initiated an investigation into the matter by registering a criminal case vide Lalbag PS Case No.- 201 dtd-17.05.2025 U/S -319(2)/318(4)/308(2)/314/61(2)/204/316(5) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The investigation was conducted under the direct supervision of the DCP, Cuttack, forming a team comprising IO Truptimayee Sahu, ACP I/C Sudhansu Bhusan Jena, and others from Lalbag PS.

Investigation reveals that the complainant was entitled to compensation as a victim of a heinous offence which was to be sanctioned from the office of the District Welfare Officer, Collectorate Cuttack.

The alleged accused, Amiya Kumar Sahoo, was working as a DEO and Office Assistant in the afore-mentioned office. He conspired with his accomplice, Sangita Singh, and others to extort illegal gratification from the victim’s sanctioned compensation.

Sangita Singh is employed as a PET at Janata Nodal Bidyapitha, Poda Diha, under Begunia Block. With a premeditated plan, she shared the victim’s details with their syndicate, and the female accused, Sangita Singh, identified herself as a staff member of the Collectorate.

Sangita insisted that the victim pays Rs 1.1 lakh from the sanctioned amount, or else they would deduct the same from it. Feeling helpless, the victim succumbed to the scheme of the accused and transferred the demanded amount in three separate transactions to two different PhonePe numbers. Afterward, despite repeated requests from the victim, the accused avoided her and ultimately misappropriated the duped amount.

With the help of the cyber cell Cuttack UPD, the female accused, Sangita Singh, was arrested on 18.05.2025 and forwarded to court. The accused, Amiya Kumar Sahoo, has been arrested today and will be produced before the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Sadar, Cuttack.
