Baripada, May 11: Protesting against the delay in admissions into the Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital, in the district, a 12-hour bandh was called by various political parties and organisations in the district, which affected the daily life at various places in the Mayurbhanj district along with the district headquarters.

While shops, business houses were shut on one side, on the other side road blockades were seen on the NH 49 and NH 18 leading to a major halt in vehicular movement in the areas. Along with, members and activists of the district CPI, CPM, congress and the bar association also took the protest to the streets demanding immediate beginning of admissions into the Medical college. This led to the educational institutions and other government offices to shutdown also.

Notably, the state government had earlier announced that the admission to the college is to start from this session. But the college is yet to receive the letter of permission from the Medical Council of India. Though the council has already reviewed the infrastructure and the facilities of the hospital and college, there has not been any response from the central team. On this the state govt has also sought the Supreme Court’s help and in the letter has blamed MCI for not taking further steps to approve the intake of 100 Undergraduates from the 2017-18 academic session.
