Death toll mounts to 52 in Malkangiri due to Japanese Encephalitis

Malkangiri, Oct 14: While the elder sister named Rebika Madkami died due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) on Thursday, her younger sister named Jayanti Madkami from Katanapalli Village also succumbed to the disease on Friday in Malkangiri.

With the death of these two, the death toll due to the disease has mounted to 52 in last 36 days.

It may be noted that, on Thursday to review the preventive steps taken for Japanese Encephalitis, Arti Ahuja, Health Secretary had visited the affected villages and after reviewing the situation she informed about various steps that have been carried out at the different places to deal with the disease. She said that to keep pigs away from the villages, special enclosures have been built by the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (F&ARD) and proper arrangements towards feeding the pigs has also been taken. To keep mosquitos away from the areas, fogging is also frequently being carried out at both, the villages and enclosures.

Also, vaccination programme in Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Malkangir and Keonjhar districts will begin from December.
