Dharmendra Pradhan urges for a Centre of Excellence on Marine Bio-Technology in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: February 17: Writing a letter to Union Science & Technology Minister Dr.Harsh Vardhan, Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has requested for setting up of a Centre of Excellence on Marine Bio-Technology at Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar.

Pradhan said, ‘World famous sites like Puri Jagannath Temple, Konark Sun Temple, Chilika Lake, Bhitarakanika National Park form the backbone of Odisha’s tourism & allied Industry. Projects like the expansion & Development of Paradip Port, IOCL Paradip Refinery, Paradip Smart Port City, Development of Dhamra LNG Terminal, Digha-Gopalpur Coastal Highway and Development of fishing harbours at Paradip & Balasore will unlock the true potential for marine-led economic growth in Odisha & Eastern-India.’

He further added, ‘ As has been reiterated by the Prime Minister, such Industrial Economic growth must be balanced with ecological conservation. It is essential to invest in preservation of delicate marine ecosystems such as the nesting sites of the endangered Olive Ridley Turtles and mangrove ecosystems while developing novel approaches using marine bio-technology.’

Also he said in his letter that, Odisha’s coastline has been in focus for Prime Minister’s vision for a marine-led Blue Economy.

Seeking Union Minister’s personal intervention for facilitating setting up of a Centre of Excellence on Marine Bio-Technology at Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar, he said,  ‘Keeping in mind the need to balance Odisha’s delicate marine ecosystem with growth of its Blue Economy, there is need for enhanced focus on scientific research.’
