Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir will be taking up a broader role in the RPSG group-owned Super Giants’ franchises, as their Global Mentor.

In the inaugural season of the SA20 league in South Africa, set to begin on January 10 of the following year, Gautam Gambhir, who led the Lucknow Super Giants to the playoffs in their IPL debut season this year, will serve as the league’s team mentor for the Durban Super Giants franchise.
Lucknow Super Giants has said on its Twitter handle, ‘We are 𝕤𝕦𝕡𝕖𝕣 𝕕𝕖𝕝𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕖𝕕 to announce Mr. Gautam Gambhir as the Global Mentor of our Super Giant family’.
LSG’s performance in IPL 2022 was greatly aided by Gambhir, who helped the team advance to the Final Four before losing to the Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Eliminator. Durban’s Super Giants, a team in the SA20 League, was also acquired by RPSG Group, and Gambhir will oversee both the new team and the existing one.
“In my ideology of a team sport designations don’t play many roles. At best they are there to facilitate a process to make a team win. As a Global mentor of Super Giants, I look forward to some added responsibility. My intensity and passion to win have just got International wings,” said Gambhir after his appointment to the role of Global Mentor.
The former left-handed batter Gambhir played crucial innings in both India’s ODI World Cup winning squad in 2011 and their men’s T20 World Cup winning squad in 2007. In 2012 and 2014, he captained Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL victories.
Gambhir played 58 Tests and made 4154 runs, amassing 5238 runs in 147 ODIs and scoring 932 runs in 37 T20Is for India. He featured in the IPL from its inception in 2008 till 2018 in which he represented the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) and Kolkata Knight Riders in 154 matches, scoring 4217 runs at an average of 31.01, including 36 half-centuries.
In the IPL, he first played for Delhi from 2008 to 2010, and then for Kolkata from 2011 to 2017.
