Bhubaneswar, Aug 22: Conditions of flood in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts improved on Sunday with both Subarnarekha and Baitarani rivers flowing below danger levels.
Officials said floodwaters have receded in Baliapal and Bhogarai blocks of Balasore district and Baitarani River is flowing below the danger level at Akhuapada and Rajghat. Release of floodwater from Galudih barrage in neighbouring Jharkhand has reduced to almost half. 2.85 lakh cusecs of water per second which was released on Saturday had come down to 1.27 lakh cusecs of water per second through five sluice gates of the barrage on Sunday.
Notably on Saturday, about 20 villages of Baliapal, Bishnupur, Asti, Madhupura and Jamakunda panchayats of Balasore district were strangled as the floodwaters entered through a breach in the embankment near Rasulpur village. It worsened when there was a lack of supply of medicines and drinking water for two days.
