Jaundice cases rising in State capital

Bhubaneswar, April 11: Even as the State government initiated steps to make people aware on aspects of hygiene to curb spread of jaundice, more cases of seizures in the disease were being reported, especially from the State capital.

The Government issued an eight point guideline to all district administration and decided to ply awareness vans on the streets in the Capital city here to spread awareness on steps to keep the disease at bay.

Sources said, as many as 20 more persons were found afflicted with jaundice on Saturday to take the number of those afflicted to 38 in the State capital.

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena visited several places in the city on Saturday and interacted with the people from the affected areas of Jharana Basti, close to the official residence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

The BMC is making arrangements to set up around 70 tube wells at various places in Bhubaneswar and to provide pipe water connection to every household within two days, said officials adding the civic body is setting up water tanks also.

The detection of Jaundice cases in the State capital spurred the Housing and Urban Development Minister Puspendra Singh Deo to direct the BMC to ply vans to create awareness among the people and keep a watch on the sellers of Gupchup, Dahi-bada and other eatables on the road side.

Meanwhile, six jaundice infected patients of Jharana Basti in the city have been shifted to Capital Hospital for treatment being supervised by the Hospital Superintendent.
