Jajpur, Sept 9: A poor man named Baikunthanath Rana of Ranpur village in Jajpur district was forced to sell his new born daughter for Rs. 6000 due to acute poverty.

As per reports, Rana’s wife Lata gave birth to a baby girl at the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Binjharpur on Sunday. The following day, with the help of an ASHA worker, Rana and Lata sold the newborn to a person.

After receiving the information, a team of officials of District Child Protection Unit arrived at Ranpur village on Thursday to look into the matter and while they interrogated Rana, he admitted that he had sold his newborn daughter to a person for Rs. 6000.

As per the information from Rana, he was forced to sell his newborn daughter to a person as he is poor and already has two daughters and a son and the birth of the forth baby would make it difficult for him to maintain and sustain the family.

A doctor of Binjharpur CHC when asked about this said that he had no knowledge about the incident.
