Bhubaneswar: June 28: Gastroenterologists and Endoscopists from the state and different parts of the country attended a day-long National Workshop on Endoscopic Ultrasonography at the IMS and Sum Hospital, run by the SOA University, here on Saturday. Dr. Manoj Kumar Sahu, head of the department of Gastroenterology at IMS and Sum Hospital and trainer of the new technology, conducted the workshop providing hands on training to the participants. Dr. Sahu said that Endoscopic Ultrasonography was the latest advanced technology in the field of Gastroenterology combining both video endoscopy and high frequency ultrasonography as a single instrument for better diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. He said this technology was being used at the IMS and Sum Hospital which was endeavoring to provide the most advanced treatment to its patients.

“The procedure can be performed by a single trained operator. This technology helps to easily diagnose diseases deep inside the chest and abdomen so that proper treatment can be provided to the patient. This also enables the doctors to conduct various surgeries in the stomach and intestine without requiring to cut open the chest and abdomen,” he said. The surgery is performed without causing any bleeding or requiring blood transfusion. It helps to treat lung and digestive tract cancers, Dr. Sahu said adding this was the only technology for detecting cancer at the early stage when it could be taken out completely through endoscopy.        “Endoscopic Ultrasonography provides better imaging than CT scan and MRI and can easily detect small legions. This technology also helps other specialities like Radiotherapy, Radio diagnosis, Surgery, Endoscopy and extend better treatment to the patients,” he said.
