Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday asked officials to speed up the construction of cyclone and flood shelters in the State keeping in view the possibility of natural disasters which the State has suffered in the past.
State government has set the target to construct 154 multifaceted cyclone shelters under NCRMD programme, of which 125 constructions have been completed so far and the the construction of the remaining are in the final stages.
Similarly, 113-km long road construction connecting the cyclone shelters has been completed and 72 per cent construction work has been completed on the 57.775-km long sea embankment.
A total of 256 flood shelters are set to be built under Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) in the State, of which 241 shelters have been completed so far.
The government is considering importing 60 satellite phones during cyclone, they said adding the tender process is underway.
Patnaik suggested the officials to expedite the work in coordination with weather department. Notably, four Doppler radar centres will be set up in Paradip, Gopalpur, Balasore and Sambalpur by India Meteorological Department for which the State government has already provided land and houses.
