CUTTACK, Oct 16: The third-round Ranji Trophy match between Group-A table toppers Assam and host Odisha reached an exciting stage on the second day today with the former finishing the four-day match at 137 for eight in the second innings at Barabati Stadium here. Assam now lead by 141 runs with two wickets in hand.
Earlier in the day, resuming at the overnight score of 52 for five, Odisha were bowled out for 88 thus conceding a four-run first innings lead.
Barring Natraj Behera and Anurag Sarangi, no other Odisha batsman was able to reach double figure. Sarangi batted with patience to top score with 27.
With a career-best haul of seven wickets for 21 runs, pacer Krishna Das played instrumental role in Assam taking the slender first-innings lead. He was well supported by Arup Das, who chipped in with three wickets.
In their second essay, Assam found themselves tottering at 13 for three in 5 overs as Kunal Saikia, skipper Gokul Sharma and Amit Verma were dismissed before opening their account. However, J Syed Mohammad’s unbeaten 42 and Tarjinder Singh’s 131-ball 27 helped Assam end the day on a positive note.
For Odisha, Basant Mohanty and Suryakant Pradhan picked up three wickets apiece while Alok Sahoo claimed one.
At the draw of stumps, Arup Das (4) was giving company to Mohammad as Assam lead by 141 runs with two wickets remaining.
