OHRC serves notice on officers over beating of Puri school student

Bhubaneswar, March 18: taking a suo moto action, Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Friday  sought report from three Education department officials over the alleged beating of a school student in Puri district. The Commission directed the District Collector, Secretary of School and Mass Education Department and Director of Primary Education to submit a report within three weeks.

The incident came to notice after a television channel aired the clips earlier in the day. Notably, a lady teacher at the Ramkrishna Vidyaniketan at Gopalpur in Puri district tied up a Class II student’s hands to an iron grill and beat him for holding a matchbox in his hand. Managing Director of the school Sushant Mishra, in his statement had said that the student had tried to set a haystack on fire.

School and Mass Education Minister Debi Prasad Mishra said appropriate action will taken against the erring teacher after the government receives report from the Block Education Officer who is investigating the incident. According to sources, school authorities have meanwhile suspended the woman teacher.
