Bhubaneswar: Flash floods in Southern Odisha has claimed one life and another has gone missing due to low pressure induced incessant rains lashing the state for the last two days.
Odisha Special Relief Commissioner GVV Sarma said a 40-year old person of Similiguda in Koraput district was swept away by gushing flood waters while another person of Koraput block is missing.
Train service was affected as stones loosened by heavy rains fell on the railway track near Machkund in Koraput-Rayagada and Koraput-Vishakhapatanam sections of East Coast Railway.
Sarma said 45 blocks in the southern districts of Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Bolangir and Ganjam received rainfall of more than 100 mm, while 9 of them received more than 200 mm.
The districts which received rainfall of more than 100 mm were Kalahandi (164), Nabarangpur (160.6), Koraput (129.8), Rayagada (123.8) and Kandhamal (104.6).
Hati river is flowing about five feet above the bridge at Junagarh disrupting communication between Bhawanipatna and Nabarangpur (NH-26). Traffic over this bridge has been closed since 7.00 pm on Wednesday, he said.
About 35 people have been evacuated from Balichhada, Biripur and Matikhal villages of Kalampur block besides Kotengaon village of Junagarh block and sheltered in a nearby school.
Dry food was provided to about 480 people of village Kotengaon, Sarma said.
Fire Service and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force unit at Jharsuguda in Sambalpur district has been moved to Kalahandi district to take up search and rescue operation and assist in evacuation if necessary, Sarma said.
In Nabaragpur district, people in Debraguda and Sirisi villages and three hamlets of Tentulikhunti block have been affected by the heavy rain and subsequent flood. Dry food has been distributed to affected people in these villages, he said.
