OPCC President asks Govt to make interest free loans to reduce farmer death rates

Cuttack/Aska, Mar 20: Today the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Prasad Harichandan met farmer Kalinga Ghadei of Jajpur who is admitted at ther SCB Medical College and Hospital here. Ghadei is now being treated at the New Medicine ICU and is stated to be critical. Ex-MP Ramachandra Khuntia accompanied Prasad in his visit. Upon the meet, Prasad stated at the media that the government must pay compensation to families of all the deceased farmers’. Also in order to reduce the death rate, agriculture loan waiver and increase in support price can be a major step. Interest free loans should be given to farmers so that they will not turn to suicide for being burdened by the loans.

On the other hand, another farmer, Brundaban Swain of Nuagaon under Aska Block in Ganjam took his life by consuming poison yesterday morning. He was rushed to the Aska hospital and later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur where he was declared as dead. Family members of Swain alleged that he committed suicide on loan burden.
