Bhubaneswar: Former bureaucrat and renowned Odia poet Ramakanta Rath passed away at the age of 91 years on Sunday. He breathed his last in his Bhubaneswar based residence in Kharavela Nagar.
Born on December 13, 1934 in a modest family in Cuttack, he holds a Master’s degree in English from Ravenshaw University. He joined the Indian Administrative service in 1957 and retired as the Honorary Chairman of Orissa Maritime Academy in 1992.
His hectic job could stop him from following his passion and he published his first poetry collection “Kete Dinara” in 1962. Famous for his “Sri Radha” (1985) anthology, he received Saraswati Samman in 1993 for the same.
He was awarded Padma Bhusan in 2006 and accolade the prestigious Atibadi Jagannath Das award in 2018.
